First Backyard

For my family and me, that change began with something simple: our very first backyard. Having a small garden and a patch of grass may not sound special to some, but for a family who had lived and run a shop in a shophouse for over fifty years, it was something entirely new.

It brought new conversations and moments we never had before — my parents talking about what trees to plant, me moving my cacti from the rooftop to a wooden bench in the garden, my brother and sister adopting our first family dog, and my grandmother picking basil leaves straight from the plant. These became the gentle, living scenes of our changing life.
