Never have the two words – Golden Age – been applied more justly than to the epoch of the Abbasid Sultanate. At the teeming epicentre of this Arabic Islamic civilisation was the city we now call Baghdad. Invention and science flourished, and were taken to new, undreamed-of heights. Philosophy and literature were not only rediscovered but reinvented, most famously in The Book Of One Thousand And One Nights – featuring the Caliph Harun Al Rashid himself. And just as when the wisdom and teachings of the ancients were pored over, so the court threw open its doors to guests.

Its mind was broad, and the welcome in its heart was lavish. Visitors were showered with gifts, while incense burned, the supreme sign of hospitality. Our newly created fragrance conjures up all these wonders, and the many faceted luxuriance of that Golden Age.
